Microsoft revealed on Monday that it has hired Sam Altman, the co-founder of ChatGPT creator OpenAI, who was suddenly ousted from the company a few days ago in a surprising management reshuffle that stunned the artificial intelligence community.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella posted on X, previously known as Twitter, that Microsoft was “very thrilled” that Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman, as well as other leaders from the AI company, would join Microsoft to head a “new cutting-edge AI research team.”

Nadella also said the software giant, the biggest backer of OpenAI, was “eager to meet” OpenAI’s new chief executive officer (CEO), former Twitch boss Emmett Shear, who was appointed to succeed Altman. Altman replied Nadella on X, “the mission goes on.”

Shear also take it to X to announce his role as OpenAI’s new CEO, writing Monday that, “Today I received a call offering me to think about a once-in-a-lifetime chance: to become the interim CEO of @OpenAI. After talking to my family and pondering over it for just a few hours, I agreed.”

At the end of a lengthy post, he added a rebuttal that OpenAI dismissed Altman because of worries about AI’s risks. Shear wrote, “Before I accepted the job. I verified the rationale behind the change. The board did not get rid of Sam over any particular conflict on safety, their reasoning was totally different from that. I’m not foolish enough to take this job without board approval for monetizing our awesome models.”
