CP Gurnani, the outgoing CEO of Tech Mahindra, has shared his positive outlook on the job creation potential of Generative AI technology. He told Reuters that Generative AI can create more jobs than it eliminates, despite the worries about its impact on the job market.

“Generative AI is still in the process of finding its applications, which means that it can open up more job possibilities in the future. There is no doubt that the opportunities are just beginning, and there is more to come,” he said to the news agency.

Generative AI technologies, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, have attracted a lot of attention for their ability to mimic human responses and generate content from novels and poems to complex computer code.

Some industry executives have expressed their concerns about the possible job losses, but Gurnani, who is one of the longest-serving CEOs in the Indian IT sector worth $245 billion, is optimistic.

He said that skilled professionals will not be replaced and that new jobs will be created, resulting in a larger job market.

Gurnani’s view is in line with that of other industry leaders, such as NR Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys, who has rejected the idea of coders losing jobs to Generative AI tools like ChatGPT as something that “will never happen.”

According to recent research from the European Central Bank and the International Labour Organization (ILO), there is no evidence of significant job loss due to Gen AI-enabled automation, despite different estimates on the potential job losses caused by Generative AI.
